Queer Territories and Abject Motherhood in Huesera (2023): Reimagining Patriarchal Landscapes of Horror. Dr. Gustavo Subero (Imperial College London)

This talk explores how both the physical and psychological gothic landscapes in the film Huesera expose the horror of women's bodies as sites of patriarchal control, where pregnancy becomes a battleground for conflicting identities. In its rejection of marianismo and its embrace of a queer reimagining of female identity, Huesera is positioned as a radical feminist text that challenges audiences to reconsider motherhood, sexuality, and agency.

Bad Bones: Architectural Rememory & the Haunted Imaginarium of the Black Atlantic Dr. Tashima Thomas (Southern Methodist University)

This presentation looks at the poetics of haunting in art and architecture as a framework for understanding gothic aesthetics through transatlantic black experiences. From Ghana’s gold coast to slaving courtyards, pens, and plantations – all dark, menacing spaces in direct relationship with gothic aesthetics. While rememory refers to the struggle of reconciliation and remembering of traumatic experiences that are often tethered to a landscape, a place, or collective testimonial and acts as a recovery method to collectively re-imagine.
